Ports management is the management of ports. In modern ports today, a number of disparate activities are carried out, such as, movement of ships, containers, passengers and other cargo, terminal operations, stevedoring, pilotage, towage, security, freight consolidation, warehousing, and maintenance and repairs. Therefore ports management involves managing these activities and resources, the movement of ships, cargo and passengers, flows of service charges to port users, and terminal and port planning and development.

Effective, efficient and quality service delivery in any organization are largely dependent on the capability and motivation of management and labour force. Therefore, a modern port can only live up to expectations, if managed and staffed by personnel trained for and experienced in this particular sort of operations. In Nigeria today, maritime sector is lagging behind that of the industrialized world because of inadequate human capital. To close this gap, Ports Management Department was therefore, included in Nigeria Maritime University for the first time to obviate this problem in the sector with world class maritime specialists through excellent maritime management education and training.
