The course is intended to equip the trainee with the knowledge, understanding, skills and competence required to work onboard a merchant ship performing operational level functions associated with the deck department (STCW Code Chapter II/1 as outlines by Section A-II/1 and competences under Table A-II/1).

The trainee is expected to complete the course then embark on a vessel for onboard practical’s commonly known as Sea Time for 12 months then sits for Oral examinations conducted by Kenya Maritime Authority which is the licensing authority. The end of the modular examinations is conducted by Kenya National Examination Council of which one obtains diploma for diploma courses or certificates for craft certificate course. The holder of the certificate of the courses can also work a shore in places like ports, oil and gas industries, etc.
